How To Set Your Facebook News Feed And Wall Settings
Today Facebook released their new homepage design and while it can be beneficial for those just wanting updates from close friends and family, it is not so friendly for those who have a large number of regularly updating friends.
One major beef that many are having already is the automatic posting onto your news feed of almost everything you do – that now ALSO appears in the news feed of all your friends.
I don’t know about you, but I really don’t need to know who became friends with who, and other people definitely do not need to know who I suddenly became friends with!
If you are want to stop these updates from posting to everyone’s news feed, follow these few simple steps:

Select the Privacy Settings link from your Settings Menu

Select The News Feed & Wall link

Uncheck each of the boxes that automatically post to your news feed, wall and your friends news feed.
You may have also noticed that you have “Live Feed” and “News Feed” links at the top of your homepage. The difference between the two at this point is all jumbled.

However, your Live Feed may be blocking much of want you actually WANT to see. Scroll down to the bottom of your Live Feed page and click on Edit Options:
NOTE: If you have never put a friend or application on HIDE, you will NOT see the Edit Options link at the bottom of your page. Simply pick someone, click on the HIDE button that will appear in the top right corner of their update, then unhide by clicking the “x” beside their name in the steps below.

Make note of the line “Live Feed automatically determines which friends to include based on who Facebook thinks you want to hear from most.” I am a little unsure as to how Facebook thinks they know me and my friends and family so well, but….
Also, if you have more than 250 friends and family, you will see that Facebook either selectively, or randomly (we are not sure which yet), cuts them off at 250. You will want to change this number to accommodate your friends total, as shown below. We recommend putting it up to 5000.

Following the above steps will help reduce the amount of mumbo jumbo appearing everywhere. I am sure Facebook felt the split feed was a step in the right direction of reducing clutter for some, but it may have slightly backfired on them at this point…
UPDATE: Some people seem to be experiencing a problem seeing the correct Edit Options pop up when they are trying to change the number of friends shown on their Live Feed. We have found a solution, albeit a goofy one, but it works.
If you do not see the correct pop up as shown above, follow these steps:
1. Make sure you are on the Live Feed tab.
2. If the pop up is only a list of friends, close it.
3. Switch to News Feed.
4. Click the Edit Options link at the bottom of the News Feed, then close it.
5. Switch back to Live Feed
6. Now when you click the Edit Options link again, it should be the correct window.
UPDATE #2
We would appreciate everyone sharing this page with their Facebook friends to help spread the solution around. Thanks guys!!

Could these “updates” on FB be the possible culprit to my not being able to play Vampire Wars properly? My VW pages have been “messed up” since Tuesday evening, so when did they start all these updates? Cuz I’ve tried several things to get my game running smoothly again, with limited success, so since it’s not a computer issue, maybe it’s a FB issue? If anyone has an info. on this, I’d appreciate it!!
I honestly don’t know Debbie.. sorry
How do you disable automatic notification of group adds/joins or comments. Also, how do you disable notifications for “becoming a fan” of a page? If I make a comment on a group, join a group, or become a fan; everyone on my friends list is notified of this.
Absolute rubbish!
That info is posted in http://thefacebookinsider.com/2009/10/facebook-how-to-edit-your-application-privacy/
Ok so I did all the stuff above and it works fine except…there’s no way to hide what I or my friends become a fan of because that’s one of the most annoying aspects of the new facebook news feed layout…I need to know how to hide “Shawn became a fan of Beef Jerky” from the news feed…
Hi Shawn… That section is posted in http://thefacebookinsider.com/2009/10/facebook-how-to-edit-your-application-privacy/
Sorry I did this. Hiding “groups” doesn’t hide “pages” from displaying in full force on your news feed it only hides what you “join”…i.e. it won’t show people “Shawn has joined the group I HATE THE NEW FACEBOOK NEWS FEED!” but it will still show “Shawn became a fan of peanut butter”…I need to know how to hide pages from news feed….pages is not a link on “application settings”
is this homepage will be permanent..or it will again change..i want my previous homepage back.that was just awsome.this one is absolutely **** up….
most of the time i m not able to open my account also..everytime it is in service……
On top of all that, my news feeds are not chronological anymore.
I suggest they revert back to the previous version, and forced those people who complained about it to make these confusing changes to ‘improve’ their screens only. This is the second time that the company has revamped themselves and screwed it up big time. The last annoying changed I virtually stopped using FB until they did the previous version. This one is similiarly annoying.
I completely agree Josh! It truly sucks to have to keep clikcing update to get the latest feed! Who became friends with who list is not the major problem here, those are small posts and easily ignored. I am missing out on posts for applications & games. ALso much of the time when using apps myself, the post option just doesnt come up at all anymore!
THis new Feed is really rubbish – what right have facebook to decide who I want to hear from and why all this useless SPAM about who is becoming friends with who ??
I had to hide an Application – Mafia wars – on the old feed it was really simple and convenient – now I have lost it for ever I can’t play any more … I really don’t give a hoot what my friends do Im only interested in getting feed from Mafia Wars – now I cannot get it back
If you go to the bottom of your Live Feed, you will see the Edit Options link. If you click that and select Applications, you can un-hide Mafia Wars from the list
That´s not true…
But what do i do, i don´t got the “edit option” on my lover level right.
I´m running the newest windows vertion “Windows-7″
So there NO feeds like that on any of the sites “LIVE FEEDS – NEWS FEEDS”.
So i was a very bad option you did on Facebook, I´m thinking of to go back to my old site.
I have read on one of the blogs, that some will attack your advertisers with SPAM, and tell them about the problem – so they can add a pressure on you.So we will get the old Facebook back. I gues i´ll join this groop.
With sad greetings
Sten.
THANKS!!! You guys ROCK!
.-= Renee´s last blog ..Q&A #112 =-.
what the duck FB is doing i dont ducking care who the duck my friends duck is,
how to remove “your friends duck and two other ducks has made friends with your neighbors duck”
What The Duck is wrong with FB telling all those ducks in our feed..
im ducking out of here.. /pif
Umm… That’s a lot of ducks quacking
I wish there was some way you could put Mafia Wars posts on a separate page and let your other posts be on the other. I love my Mafia Wars but with the addition of all the new members that I have it is completely dominating my Facebook and I have to scroll indefinitely just to see other posts from my friends who are not into Mafia. I have got to think this is a problem with a lot of the other Mafia players! I get hundreds of mafia posts each day and the other posts are much less and get lost in the mafia posts!
I still dont have an edit option either..Very frustrating
I know it is… And I wish we had a solution for those of you not seeing it…
the steps above WON’T WORK if you have NEVER put a friend on HIDE. Just go to your News Feed and go to the right side of the screen until the word HIDE appears and then click HIDE. Then follow the steps above
this actually is what you need to do. I wasn’t given the option of edit options until i hid someone. then it gave me the option and i was able to change it to 5000 rather than 250.
